Trumpet
Born in South Wales in 1987, Huw was educated at Chetham’s School of Music, and is now a scholar at the Royal Academy of Music, continuing his studies under Professor James Watson, Mark David and Robert Farley. Since becoming Brass Winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2006, Huw has performed across Europe, Asia and North America, becoming the youngest ever winner of both the International Trumpet Guild Solo and Orchestral competitions. Other prizes include 3rd Place in the Texaco Young Musician of Wales (2003), the Young Soloist Award from the Melos Brass Academy (2008), awards from the Hattori Foundation and EMI Music Sound Foundation, and most recently a Special Jury Prize and 4th Place in the Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Solo Competition (Boston – 2008).
In addition to appearing in recital at venues including King’s Place and the Wigmore Hall, Huw has performed at international festivals, broadcast on national TV and radio, and recently gave the world première of Leif Segerstam’s Symphony No. 173, conducted by the composer. He has appeared as soloist with ensembles including the Northern Sinfonia, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Hamburg Camerata and Sinfonia Cymru, under conductors including Tortelier and Zehetmair. A committed chamber musician, Huw is a founder member of brass ensembles QuintEssence and The Brass Collective, whilst orchestral work includes the LSO, Philharmonia, Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, NYOGB and PMF Orchestra (Japan). Since January 2009 Huw has served as acting Associate Principal Trumpet in the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Finland.
