Matthew Sharp
Cello
Following studies at the Köln Musikhochschule, Cambridge University and in Stockholm, Matthew's career has embraced concerto, recital and vocal performances at major venues and festivals worldwide, cross-disciplinary collaborations with leading artists, pioneering community projects and visionary new music theatre work with SharpWire.
Recent highlights include appearances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the premiere of Pete Wyer's May Peace Prevail with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Barbican, Papageno and the title role in the new commission of The Pied Piper for Opera North and performances in Scandinavia, Africa, the US and across the UK.
Matthew's 'astonishingly comprehensive versatility' The Daily Telegraph, as solo cellist, bass-baritone, theatre performer and improvisor has led to startlingly original collaborations with musicians, writers, directors and choreographers. He has worked with over 30 composers and given numerous world premieres, among them works by John Tavener, Mike Westbrook, Richard Dubugnon, Rachel Leach, Richard Causton and Luke Stoneham. He has broadcast widely on TV and Radio, recorded discs for Sony, Naxos and Avie and is perhaps the only musician to have performed at all the major London concert halls as both solo cellist and solo vocalist.
Future plans include concerto and recital performances in Portugal, Russia and Scandinavia, appearances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the South Bank, the premiere of Errollyn Wallen's new cello concerto, the principal bass-baritone roles in the premiere of The Silent Twins for the Almeida Opera Festival and the development of two multi-media projects, Cremenville (short-listed for commissioning by the Brighton Festival) and Who's the Daddy, supported by Opera North, with SharpWire.
