Chiao-Ying Chang

Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1981, Chiao-Ying Chang began her piano studies at the age of five. She was first recognised nationally by winning 1st prize at both the National Piano Competition and Kawai Competition for Young Pianists in 1991 and gave her first solo recital in the following year. She continued her studies with Professor Yu-Chiou Tchen at the Affiliated High School of National Taiwan Normal University before winning a full scholarship to London's Royal Academy of Music in 1997, where she studied with Christopher Elton and Maria Curcio. She was awarded the Hodgson fellowship in 2003/2004.
During her studies Chiao-Ying won a series of top prizes at major international competitions including third prize at the 2002 ARD Munich Competition and second prize at both the 2000 AXA Dublin and the 1998 Ettlingen International Competitions. In 2001 she was selected for representation by the Young Concert Artists Trust in London.
In 2003 Chiao-Ying won fifth prize at the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition, performing Beethoven's Concerto No.4 with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Mark Elder. She immediately went on to win the 2nd prize (1st prize not awarded) at the 1st Taiwan International Piano Competition.
Recently Chiao-Ying has given recitals at major festivals and venues throughout the UK including the Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, St. George's Bristol, the Cambridge Summer, North Aldeborough, Newbury, Brighton, Oundle and Honiton Festivals. She has also appeared as soloist at the Busoni Festival in Bolzano, Italy, the Kammermusikfest des ARD-Wettbewerbs in Schloss Elmau, Munich, and Berlin in Germany. In spring 2005 her first commercial CD of the complete Schubert Impromptus D899 and D935 was released on the German label Audite.
Chiao-Ying's concerto work has included appearances with the Collegium Musicum Orchestra in Basel, the National Irish Symphony, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Regensburg Philharmonic, Brighton Philharmonic, London Soloist Chamber and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras. |
