Special Needs

Special Needs Orchestra of the Swan enjoys a very fruitful partnership with Welcombe Hills School in Stratford upon Avon, which gives pupils access to live music experiences tailored to their particular needs, and supports musicians with specialist training in this field of workshop delivery.

Each workshop for PMLD pupils (primary or secondary) features two musicians who work closely and intuitively to weave a stimulating, improvised sound world.  These workshops can be used to support the achievement of pupils’ individual targets, to create a positive shared experience for the class, to provide relaxation, and interaction for non-verbal pupils.  Content is devised in close consultation with the school’s music specialist.

For other secondary pupils, workshops are an opportunity to get creative by making their own music through directing the musicians, making graphic scores, and talking about their preferences.  Songwriting is especially popular, with the subject(s) selected by pupils or to fit a school theme. Pupils can join in with their own instruments too, and record and review their work.

Please note that our special needs workshops are not music therapy.
