Shu Wang
Shu Wang is rapidly emerging as a composer with a highly intuitive and individual voice and we are delighted that Shu is one of our commissioned composers for this season.
Born in 1978 in Panjin, north-east China, Shu began composing at the age of 12, later studying composition, piano, Chinese music history and Chinese traditional music at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.
Following her studies, she was commissioned to write the music for a 26 episode TV drama, broadcast across China and she gained commercial experience as a music editor for CCTV, a children's channel in Beijing.
In 2003, Shu studied at the Guildhall School for a Masters Degree and now works at the Yehudi Menuhin School as music assistant.
Recently Shu has composed for the Chinese State Circus tour of the UK, which culminated in 14 consecutive performances at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Commissions and Performances
Dian - 2006
I November 2006: Civic Hall, Stratford-upon-Avon (world premiere)
Dian
Dian was composed in 2006 as a commission for The Swan Orchestra. It is scored for strings, either just 12 string players or for a full string orchestra, and it receives its premiere performances at this time. The Chinese word Dian has many meanings. Literally it is a 'dot' or 'point', and some of the music was inspired by the idea of points of light shining in the dark at night time - perhaps in reality or perhaps in one's imagination. The piece is a single 12 minute structure, formed from inter-connection short sections.
